What people are saying about Phillip Schofield coming out as gay

TV presenter Holly Willoughby has led the tributes to Phillip Schofield as he came out as gay on Friday morning's This Morning.

She wrote on her Instagram account: "Never been more proud of my friend than I am today.

"We'll be together at 10am on This Morning."

Phillip, 57, who has been married to his wife Stephanie Lowe for 27 years, made the announcement on Instagram on Friday.

He revealed his inner conflict and said he is now ready to "celebrate and be proud" of his sexuality.

The couple have daughters Molly, 27, and Ruby, 24.

In a surprise move, Ruth Langsford and Eammon Holmes, walked onto the set to hug Schofield.

Comedian Matt Lucas, who is gay, tweeted: "I'm not surprised about Phillip Schofield.

"Growing up I remember him presenting with Gordon the Gopher from inside that closet.

"Joking aside, that cannot have been an easy statement to make.

"People come out at different stages in their lives. Good luck Phillip."

X Factor TV presenter Dermot O'Leary tweeted: "Sending big love to the Schofield and his family. Stand up big guy, heart of a lion x"

Singer Ronan Keating tweeted: "Sending all my love and support Phillip Schofield and his family. Incredibly brave."

Former Coronation star Shobna Gulati said simply: "All respect and love Schofe x"

And Olympic boxer Nicola Adams said: "It takes a lot of bravery to be your self Schofe".

Pointless presenter Richard Osman said: "When you create a new entertainment show and start discussing who should host, the first name on the list is always Phillip Schofield.

"That's a fact. He's just the very best at what he does, and the public adore him.

"Looking forward to many more years of his charm and brilliance."
