What Patrick Vieira said about Marc Guehi after he conceded late penalty vs Leeds United

Patrick Vieira says Marc Guehi will learn from his error against Leeds United that cost Crystal Palace a penalty at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

The England Under-21 captain handled the ball from a corner three minutes into stoppage time against the Whites, leaving referee Kevin Friend with no other option than to point to the spot after consulting with VAR.

Raphinha subsequently tucked away the spot-kick to snatch all three points for Marcelo Bielsa's side at the death, leaving Guehi red-faced as his teammates sunk to the floor around him at the full-time whistle.

Speaking to the media after the game Vieira said he wouldn't need to address the problem with his player directly, and that Guehi would learn from the mistake moving forward.

He also praised the young defender for what he believed was a solid overall performance during the game and said it was indicative of the start he has made to life in a Palace shirt.

"I don't need to speak to [Marc] about it," Vieira told football.london.

"I think he is frustrated and he will learn from that. This is a player who needs to keep developing himself and to learn you have to go through those situations.

"But I'm really pleased with the game that he had tonight. I think Marc is growing as a player and as a person and I was really impressed with his leadership in the squad since he arrived."

Despite the loss - Palace's second in as many matches following defeat to Aston Villa last time out - Vieira said he was pleased with the application shown by his team throughout the 90 minutes.

Much of the build-up to the match surrounded Crystal Palace's defending from set-pieces, and although it was a corner that led to Marc Guehi's handball, they were generally better at stopping the second ball from falling to a Leeds player's feet at Elland Road.

"I think the performance tonight is more positive," said Vieira.

"Obviously, the outcome of the game wasn't something that we wanted. But the performance was what I wanted from the squad from the team, because we defended well as a team. We didn't give them so much space, they didn't create so many chances."

He was also honest with his thoughts on the decision to award Leeds their penalty, adding: "If it was on the other side, I would expect the referee to give the penalty. I had a chance to look at it again and I believe it was a penalty."
