What part did computers play in the Apollo 11 moon landing?

It’s often said that the Apollo 11 moon mission was accomplished with computers far less powerful than your average modern smartphone. But what did computer technology actually contribute to the moon landing? Wasn’t it basically all down to the clever maths and ingenuity of the humans involved?
