What order should you apply your skincare- Belfast beauty expert shares her routine

We all want glowy clear skin, but may not have that perfect skin care routine to make it happen.

With so many products on offer, it can be daunting knowing whether or not you are doing it right.

Skincare has developed so much and is no longer just a case of simply cleansing, toning and moisturising.

Belfast-based @skincarewithvikki has shared her routine.

Vikki works at BTY Cosmetics and also works with affordable skincare brand The Ordinary

She has been helping customers with their skincare concerns for the past three years and is self-confessed 'skincare obsessed'.

Vikki told Belfast Live: "I'm all for low priced, effective skincare and I've always been conscious of ways I could improve my skin."

Step 1

To start of any routine, you should be cleansing your skin effectively.

Double cleansing is a good idea - the first cleanse to break down makeup and the second which will go deep into your pores and clean your skin.

Step 2

Use a wash off face mask two or three times a week - but these are not essential in every single routine.

Step 3

Tone your skin - but Vikki says this is personal preference and 'toners only benefit if they have an active ingredient in them'.

Toners can help to balance out your PH levels and dampen your skin, helping other products to sink in even deeper and work more effectively.

If you are just using a hydrating primer, use your fingers instead of a cotton pad as it will use less product.

A cotton pad is good for chemical exfoliant toners as it will help remove the dead skin.

Avoid toners with alcohol and fragrance if you have sensitive skin.

Step 4

It's time for serums. Hyaluronic acids will help other products go further into your skin - it will help others that go on after to work better.

Vikki said: "I highly recommend that everyone has a hyaluronic acid in their routine. If your skin is effectively hydrated it's going to slow down signs of aging, control the oil and it will help with dryness in your skin too."

Step 5

Treatments such as Vitamin C, peptides or chemical exfoliants - serums that are designed to target your skin concerns.

Vikki uses only one treatment in her night routine as her skin is sensitive.

She says not to use two chemical exfoliants as it will burn your skin and be too harsh.

Vikki added: "Some of my favourite treatments are Vitamin C. I like to apply my Vitamin C serums and treatments in the morning as they act as an antioxidant throughout the day.

"It means I can keep my chemical exfoliants and my other treatments to night time."

The skincare lover also says when using these type of products, it's important to use a sun cream during the day as your skin is constantly renewing itself and bringing out new layers - that won't be as tolerable to the sun.

Step 6

The final step is to apply your moisturiser all over your face.

Step 7

Eye cream to hydrate under your eyes.

Step 8

An oil to lock everything in from all of your products.

Everyone's skin is different - so this can be skipped if you don't have oily skin, meaning you can tailor this routine to what will suit you personally.
