With any luck, Danny Santana won't have to use his first baseman's glove during the 2020 MLB season.
He learned to play there last season as the Texas Rangers looked for way to keep his surprisingly hot bat in the lineup, but it's safe to say it was the least favorite of the seven positions he played.
Santana likes to run and throw, showing off what manager Chris Woodward said is the best arm on the team.
But center field? That's where Santana wants to play, and he will enter spring training as the favorite for that job on Opening Day.
However, there is one significant obstacle between that happening.
Santana was too good at what he did last season.
The Rangers want to move him around again, and general manager Jon Daniels will look outside the organization at other center fielder. The Rangers will look at internal candidates this spring to see if anyone steps forward.
"As of right now, Danny is our leading candidate," Woodward said. "JD and I both see Danny's ultimate value is his ability to move around while playing pretty much every day. It's a huge value for us. I'm hoping one of these guys comes in and tears it up and forces our hand."
Here's a look at some potential candidates to play center field.
