What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United players after Southampton draw

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United's inexperience is not a sufficient excuse for their poor points return after four Premier League matches.

Ten-man Southampton held United to a 1-1 draw at St Mary's and Solskjaer's side have a point less than they did at this stage last season. United have won just three of their last 16 games under Solskjaer since their remarkable Champions League comeback at Paris Saint-Germain.

United had over 20 minutes to break down a Southampton side reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Kevin Danso but forced Angus Gunn into only a handful of saves. Despite an inauspicious August, Solskjaer remained optimistic after the game.

"We have a clear plan and we believe in the players and believe in the way we do things," Solskjaer said. "You can say it's long-term but we deserved to win the last three games as well.

"And the one thing you cannot control in football is results and outcomes. You can control the effort, attitude, what we're doing in training. We're on the right track, we're working and, as I said to the boys, we need to learn to win these games.

"Last week's game, Wolverhampton game, we need to learn that, I know we're a young team but that's not an excuse, there's plenty of quality.

"I don't know how many shots we've had today and in the last game against Palace but it's a matter of taking them chances and that's what football is all about, getting it inside the posts.

"But we'll get there, we're working on it, and so delighted for Dan [James] with his strike again, he's had a fantastic impact since he's come and he can give us quality in both ways of football."

United next play Leicester at Old Trafford on September 14.
