What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said about Erling Braut Haaland joining Manchester United

Erling Braut Haaland grabbed the headlines on the opening night of the Champions League group stage.

Despite those in England presumably watching Liverpool and Chelsea in their respective games, Haaland wrote his name into the competition's history books by scoring a hat-trick for his side.

Aged just 19, the forward scored a first-half hat trick in Red Bull Salzburg's clash with Genk, and by doing so became the first teenager to score more than once on his Champions League debut since Manchester United 's Wayne Rooney against Fenerbahce in 2004.

The teenager is the son of former Manchester City midfielder Alf-Inge, who saw his playing days come to an abrupt end following a horror tackle by United legend Roy Keane.

But United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have been aware of the forward prior to his Champions League exploits, as he gave Haaland his senior debut whilst in charge of Molde.

Salzburg are believed to have rejected a move from an unknown club for his services last summer, and when asked in 2018 about a proposed move to United, Solskjaer gave this response:  "He is probably not the world’s biggest Manchester United fan.

"But if they come to the door, there are not many who say no to that."

Haaland is actually a massive a Leeds United fan, and has openly admitted he hopes to represent the Whites in England's top-flight.

He said "I want to be the best. The dream is to win the Premier League with Leeds - and to be a better player than dad."
