What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said about Anthony Martial reaction to Manchester United substitution

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played down Anthony Martial's disgruntled reaction to being substituted in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

The 20-goal Martial was replaced by Odion Ighalo in the 79th minute but Marcus Rashford, also on 20 goals for the season, stayed on and was denied a late effort by Pepe Reina.

Martial has not completed a Premier League match since Ighalo joined United on loan from Shanghai Shenhua and Martial has scored seven goals in his last nine league starts with Ighalo available.

The 24-year-old appeared unhappy to come off again in the dying embers but Solskjaer was actually pleased by Martial's shift in mood. “Nah, Anthony's getting fitter and fitter. He could have lasted the game, of course, and he's starting every game. I'd have been more worried if he wanted to come off. Everyone wants to be part of the team and be on the pitch.

"He’s put a shift in, so that's fine. He's great for me to have him available to start every game."

United were 14 points behind Leicester after 24 Premier League games but have slashed that deficit to one, although they are still six behind in the goal difference column.

If United win all four of their remaining league games they will finish in the top four as they face Leicester on the final day and Solskjaer hopes points make the difference over goal difference.

“I think we could have scored many, many more goals and we're keeping clean sheets," Solskjaer added. "But, of course, we keep just going into every game wanting to win. If you 1-0 2-0 or 3-0, it doesn’t matter if we get the points.

"Hopefully the goal difference won't be the deciding factor in the end because we should have had 10 more goals the last two games."
