What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did on the pitch after Man Utd's defeat to Everton

The wheels came off the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bus in epic style as Manchester United suffered a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Everton .

The Red Devils suffered a sixth defeat in their last eight matches as they fell further behind in the top four race.

Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott all found the net as United were humiliated at Goodison Park.

And after the thrashing Solskjaer fronted up in front of the travelling United fans.

The Norwegian walked over to the Bullens Road Stand almost as soon as Paul Tierney blew the final whistle to apologise for his side's performance.

Solskjaer held up his hands and clapped the fans in thanks for their support, with a number of players also going over.

The fans reacted by cheering the popular former striker.

Solskjaer said: "From the first whistle everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to the fans. They’re the only people with the badge on today who can hold their head high, because we can’t.

“Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result. Talent has never been enough.

“We just didn’t perform. That was not worthy of a Manchester United team. We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club. We have a perfect chance to make amends on Wednesday [against Manchester City].”

Gary Neville was vexed by United's performance and was not impressed that Solskjaer needed to apologise.

"I'm furious. I'm absolutely furious," former defender Neville said on Sky Sports. "That performance was rancid. It was rotten out there. I'm furious, the fact Solskjaer has to go over and apologise to the fans at the whistle is embarrassing.“

The result leaves United two points adrift of Arsenal in fourth - with the Gunners facing Crystal Palace at 4pm on Sunday.
