What Nottingham city centre was like on the last weekend before Covid passports

On the last weekend before the introduction of new Covid restrictions Nottingham was in a jovial mood.

As part of the Government's 'Plan B, which was announced on Wednesday, December 8, face masks are now compulsory in most public indoor venues, including cinemas, theatres and places of worship.

NHS Covid passes are also set to become mandatory, as nightclubs, sports grounds and other venues have been given one week to prepare for the changes.

Indoor events of 500 people or more, outdoor events with 4,000 people or more and any venue that holds 10,000 people or more, are all included.

The city centre was about as busy as you'd expect, with hundreds of people coming in and out of the Christmas market despite concerns around the Omicron variant.

People danced to music played by a band dressed in Santa costumes on Clumber Street while others did the Cha-Cha slide and Macarena in Old Market Square.

Revellers said that they were not too concerned with the introduction of vaccine passports.

Tyler Wilson, 25, a labourer from Bulwell, said “It’s a chaotic night, seen loads of people dancing to music and a lot of Santas.

“I think everyone should enjoy this Christmas as much as we can.

“I’m really not sure on vaccine passports - I don’t want a Christmas like last year's so in that sense if they help I’m all for that.”

Stacy Heath, 23, a beautician from Nottingham, said: “Everyone is having a good time - I don’t think many people are thinking about it

“I don’t really get why vaccine passports are going to be at some places but then not at pubs or bars.

“But I don’t want places to close again; I want a normal Christmas.”

And Chloe Walker, 29, from Sherwood, said: “I’m happy people have come out but I’m a bit nervous about a Christmas lockdown or something like that.

“But vaccine passports - I really don’t know, if they work then that’s good. People have had long enough to get vaccinated if they wanted to.

“I don’t feel unsafe being out.”
