What Nicolas Pepe did that really annoyed Martin Keown during Brighton vs Arsenal

Martin Keown was unhappy at how long Nicolas Pepe took to get back onto the pitch after an injury during the first half of Arsenal's game with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The winger went off for treatment midway through the first half, forcing Arsenal to play with 10 men until he returned to the field.

Yet he took some time to get back onto the pitch as he had to do his shoelaces up.

Mikel Arteta has faith in David Luiz

Speaking on BT Sport, former Gunners defender Keown was left unimpressed by how long Pepe took, arguing that he should have been ready to come on as soon as the referee allowed him to.

Keown said: "Just looking at Pepe there - he’s not even ready to come back on - he’s got a problem with his lace.

"Am I picking on him? He should be ready to come on now.

"He was having treatment at the end of that first quarter. It looks like he’s ready now…"

Pepe has been a regular for the Gunners this season, with this being his 33rd appearance of the campaign.

Yet Keown has consistently criticised him since his summer move from Lille.

In Septepmber, the pundit argued that Bukayo Saka looked like a more senior player than Pepe did.

He said: " You think of the way Pepe’s playing at the moment, they paid £72m for him and this kid looks better than him."

Keown continued the theme in February, once again talking up Saka at Pepe's expense.

He said: "We shouldnt forget that this young man is 18 years of age and is coming through the academy.

"I dont want to pick on Pepe but if you look at the performances, who is creating the assists, it's coming from the academy player and he has got his chance and boy he’s taken it."
