What Nicky Butt told Scott McTominay when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became Manchester United manager

Scott McTominay has revealed the challenge that Nicky Butt gave him when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became Manchester United manager.

Solskjaer arrived at Old Trafford in mid-December following the sacking of Jose Mourinho and had an instant impact, going on an 11 game unbeaten run.

However, McTominay didn't start in any of those games and he has had to wait for his opportunity.

Then an injury crisis struck before the trip to Paris to face PSG in the Champions League Last-16 second leg and he finally got his chance.

The Scott put in a great performance as United some how did the unimaginable and won after being 2-0 down in the first leg.

McTominay would go on to put in another brilliant showing against Barcelona and his energy and determination in the midfield is seeing him quickly become a fan favourite.

Now the 22-year-old has revealed that the words of United's head of youth development, Nicky Butt, helped inspire his redeeming run of form.

"I was sad when he [Mourinho] left but football moves on," the 22-year-old told The Times.

"He is an amazing manager but we have another amazing manager in Ole.”

“I remember Butty saying ‘what a chance for you now, lad. what an opportunity to show an absolute club legend what you’ve got.

Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood provides Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with timely reminder of his class

"You’ve got to fancy yourself to show him you can play and be a regular for Manchester United.’”

McTominay showed patience to get his chance and he believes that not all players have the same attitude.

"I feel some boys nowadays are ‘I should play instantly and if not I’m leaving.’ That’s all very well, but if Manchester United is in your blood, like it is mine, you’re not ready to give up an opportunity like this easily. You fight.

"Like my dad always says, grab the opportunity because if you don’t someone else will. There are loads of kids in the reserves now who are so hungry for it - Jimmy Garner, Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong, and if we in the first team aren’t doing it then the boss and Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna will say we’re not having it. We have boys who are ready and want it more than you.”
