What next for Swansea City and Oli McBurnie following £15m Sheffield United bid and the man who holds all the cards

Swansea City are determined not to lose Oli McBurnie this summer.

The striker is a wanted man as a result of his efforts in the 2018/19 campaign, a season that saw the Scot bag 24 goals in all competitions under Graham Potter.

And on Monday, for the 23-year-old.

The Jack Army are understandably wary of what the future may hold for McBurnie. So here's the striker's current situation in full, as well as a closer look at what could happen in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Over to you, Sheffield United

The Blades have already recruited forward Callum Robinson from Preston for a club-record fee this summer.

But having gained promotion into the Premier League last season, Chris Wilder is keen to bring in further reinforcements to give his side the strongest chance possible of remaining in the top flight beyond the 2019/20 season.

Sheffield United have been strongly linked with a swoop for Brentford's Neal Maupay, although it's been widely reported that McBurnie has been Wilder's top target for some time now.

With Leon Clarke, David McGoldrick, Billy Sharp and now Robinson in their ranks, the Blades have a wealth of options up front.

But it's understood that the Bramall Lane outfit are determined to land McBurnie, regardless of their other transfer dealings this summer. So the opening bid of £15m sounds like being the beginning as far as this potential transfer is concerned.

Swansea's stance

As per the intro, Swansea have no desire to sell McBurnie.

Potter endured two immensely difficult transfer windows during his sole season in South Wales, and there were always going to be sales in Steve Cooper's first at the Liberty Stadium.

Daniel James completed a big money move to Manchester United in June which went a long way to stabilising the club financially.

In addition to the young Welshman's departure, Swansea are hoping to offload the likes of Crystal Palace-bound Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew, and Borja Baston as swiftly as possible in a bid to further balance the books.

Swansea have always always eager to keep McBurnie, just as they were with James, although there was an acceptance regarding the latter that the time was right to cash in on the Wales international.

And as a result of their dealings, Swansea feel they do not have to sell the man who topped the scoring charts at SA1 last term.

However, every player has a price, which leads us nicely to the next point.

Would Swansea consider selling?

In a word, yes. But only if the price is right.

Chairman Trevor Birch last week revealed that the Swans may not be able to turn down a "knockout" offer for McBurnie or any of Cooper's other key first-team stars.

With just one full season in the Championship - albeit a hugely impressive one - under his belt, it remains to be seen whether or not McBurnie would cut the mustard in the Premier League, with Sheffield United or elsewhere.

So if a significant bid were to be received for the Scottish international, it's understandable to see why the Swans would ponder the idea of letting him go.

Given that you feel that it would take a fee in the region of £20m at the very least for Swansea to even think about flogging their prized asset. Although they may hold out for even more than that.

The hard bargaining stance

Having met supporters at a fans' forum last week, the Jack Army were left somewhat reassured when Birch spoke about the club's desire to retain the services of McBurnie.

As mentioned, there could yet be an offer that proves too tantalising for Swansea to resist, but having booted the ball back into Sheffield United's court, it's fair to say that Swansea hold the aces at present.

There isn't an urgent need to sell McBurnie, and it means Birch can play hardball with the Blades along with any other clubs who circle SA1 for the Swans' best players.

As much as fans will hope this doesn't become a saga, there's every chance that Sheffield United will continue to up the ante in their bid to get the man they want while on the flip side, you can't rule out the possibility of him remaining at the Liberty.

But if a move were to go through, McBurnie's departure would be for the right fee as far as the Swans are concerned.
