What next for Sergio Romero as Man Utd dump him from Champions League squad after wife rant

Sergio Romero has been brutally left out of Manchester United's Champions League squad for the competition's group games this season.

United's squad was announced on Thursday morning but there was no room for the 33-year-old shot stopper.

David De Gea, Dean Henderson and Lee Grant have all been named ahead of Romeo.

The Argentinian was due to leave the club this summer but a transfer deadline day loan to Everton fell through and the Toffees signed Robin Olsen from Roma instead.

Romero's wife, Eliana Guercio, was left raging and demanded respect from the club in an angry social media post.

She followed her comments up by adding: "It was a very stressful day for us. I have to say that I am sad, very sad on one and happy on the other hand.

"I am sad because Sergio deserved the opportunity to go to another club, he has shown what he can do and he worked every day."

She added: "He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.

"It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club."

The Champions League squad announcement is now yet another blow to Romero who is running out of options.

The domestic transfer deadline is open which means Romero could go on loan to a Championship club - though this would be a major step down for the shot-stopper.

Another possibility is for Romero to go to the MLS.

The transfer window in the United States is open until October 29. The downside of this, however, is that with much of the season played already - and the play offs in December - Romero could find himself entering another off-season period before the new campaign starts in March 2021.

Of course, the only other option for Romero is to simply sit tight for a couple of months and wait for the January transfer window.
