What next for former Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback as wages 'a big issue' for interested clubs?

The future of former Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback remains up in the air, after being left out of Newcastle United’s Premier League squad.

The midfielder, who was a target for the Reds this summer while Martin O’Neill was still manager, is said to have interest from elsewhere – but his wages are reportedly proving a stumbling block.

Colback had previously been frozen out at St James’ Park by former boss Rafa Benitez, but seemed to have been given a fresh start when Steve Bruce took charge, being involved in a number of pre-season friendlies.

However, he was one of five senior players not to make the final cut when the Magpies’ 25-man Premier League squad was named earlier this month.

The summer transfer window has now closed for English Premier League and Championship clubs, but remains open for Leagues One and Two, as well as abroad.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, Colback “has admirers in Scotland and League One, but the money is a big issue”.

The 29-year-old had two impressive loan spells at the City Ground and made 39 appearances in the Garibaldi last season.

United boss Bruce has said Colback was left out of his squad due to the deadline day arrivals of Andy Carroll and Emil Krafth.

“We signed two players late on,” he said. “If we hadn’t brought them in, then Jack was likely to be in the squad.

“I did explain that to Jack.

“But yeah, it was difficult.”
