What Newcastle and Durham's Slug and Lettuces are doing to prevent spiking

Bars in the North East are implementing extra safety measures in a bid to prevent people spiking drinks.

Slug and Lettuce in both Newcastle and County Durham are offering drink covers called StopTopps designed to prevent people from dropping substances into glasses.

A statement from Slug and Lettuce Newcastle said: "We've got you covered here at Slug & Lettuce, Newcastle Central!

"We care about the safety of all our lads and lasses so now have StopTopps for all of our drinks.

"Give one of our staff a shout if you'd like one and stay safe."

Customers took to Facebook to applaud the bar for attempting to keeping them safe.

One person said: "Love this but terrible that it has to be done to protect people," while another said: "Fantastic idea, everyone should do this as standard."

A third said: "All pubs should be doing this, but unfortunately now they are injecting too. My daughter was injected in a club at Brighton over a week ago, devastating news for a parent to hear."

It comes amid rising fears over spiking in the North East as people come forward to share their stories.

Last week Durham nightclubs closed early on Tuesday around 5,000 boycotted bars and took part in Durham Night In.

Just days before the boycott Durham Constabulary said it received reports of "several" spiking incidents, some purported to include a needle.

Elsewhere in the country, some forces have received a concerning number of reports of alleged spiking incidents, including spiking by injection.
