What new lockdown rules mean for gyms in the UK

England will become subject to a series of new lockdown rules - with bars, pubs and restaurants forced to close at 10pm, and face masks becoming compulsory for all retail workers.

As well as these rules, which come into force tomorrow, adults will now be banned from playing indoor team sports, meaning that popular games like five-a-side football will be put on hold for the timebeing.

However, team sports can still be played outdoors, where the risk of transmission of the virus is lower.

Gym classes will also be able to continue - which is good news for many gym-goers, who had been worried that gyms could close under the government's new lockdown rules.

In a statement PureGym said that its gyms will continue to operate as usual across England.

A spokesperson for PureGym said: "[There will be] no change as the changes announced are not applicable to indoor group exercise which can be done in a COVID-secure way ensuring social distancing."

A spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport told Manchester Evening News: "Adult indoor team sport at grassroots level, like basketball or five a side football, is no longer exempt from the rule of six.

"This does not apply to children or other indoor grassroots sports."
