How new Championship plan could promote Nottingham Forest, Leeds and West Bromwich Albion

Nottingham Forest could feature in a new-look Championship play-off showdown as part of a new EFL contingency plan to ensure movement between leagues.

The season is currently suspended until further notice due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Reds are currently fifth in the table - in a play-off spot - with nine matches of the regular campaign remaining.

It is still hoped that the season can be completed behind closed doors over the summer.

However, there are a number of concerns over the health risks involved.

As such, other options are being considered to decide the outcome of the 2019-20 campaign.

According to The Guardian, the EFL's "preferred contingency" for promotion from the Championship if the remaining fixtures cannot be played would see the current top two sides - Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion - go up to the Premier League automatically.

Meanwhile, the play-off berths would be decided based on the current standings, which would see Fulham, Brentford, Forest and Preston North End make the cut.

Forest would face fourth-placed Brentford in a one-off semi-final clash - rather than over two legs as is usually the case.

The match would be played at a neutral ground and behind closed doors, says the report.

The winner of Forest v Brentford would then take on either Fulham or Preston in the final - to decide the third promotion spot.

The Guardian article states: "The Championship wants and intends to complete the season but as its clubs wait to be informed on how protocols for behind-closed-doors matches would work – and how difficult they could be to fulfil – it has been prudent to discuss contingencies that could offer some integrity to the final table.

"With the caveat that government and public health advice could yet override everything, the working theory is that if the Premier League could potentially play numerous matches, the Championship ought to be able to stage at least three to resolve its play-offs. It is unclear how it would work out the issue of relegation."
