What Neil Lennon said about Rangers guard of honour snub as Celtic stand one dropped point from sporting tradition

Neil Lennon once claimed Rangers "broke from tradition" for not giving Celtic a guard of honour as they faced off in a derby match immediately after his side won the title.

It seems like a lifetime ago now but Steven Gerrard's first season in charge across the city ended in title failure as they wound up nine points behind their rivals in the 2018-19 season.

Lennon's men clinched an eighth Premiership crown on the spin with a 3-0 victory at Aberdeen and would travel to Ibrox the following weekend.

All the build-up was dominated by talk of whether the home side would welcome the champions onto the pitch with a round of applause but Gerrard made it known beforehand that wouldn't be the case.

He said the decision was taken higher up the club, and that he wasn't involved.

And opposing gaffer Lennon may have created a rod for his own back with his comments at the time.

Returning to the current campaign, one more dropped point in the Parkhead club's next two games - a home match against Aberdeen this weekend followed by a trip to face Dundee United - will see the men from Govan hoist their first league flag in a decade if they can secure two more wins over Livingston and St Mirren.

They'll then face Celtic in the east end on March 21, and a guard of honour may be due for the new league winners.

Back in 2019, Lennon said: "It’s a break from tradition. I think we would have done it if the shoe had been on the other foot. But it’s not a major issue.

"It would have been a touch of class if they did it. I’m disappointed they are not."

And then came the kicker.

"Celtic would have done it."
