Mohamed Salah and Liverpool have the momentum - now Man City face their toughest period

There was no way Mohamed Salah wasn't celebrating this one.

From the moment the ball left the Liverpool attacker's left foot, you knew Kepa Arrizabalaga was in trouble.

The Chelsea goalkeeper didn't stand a chance. In truth, no goalkeeper in the world would have as Liverpool fans notice what Mohamed Salah did when celebrating Chelsea goal in crucial Premier League clash struck true from the right-hand edge of the area, thrashed into the top corner of the Kop goal.

Salah had been reluctant to make much of his strike in this fixture last season, leading to suggestions it was a show of respect to his former club.

The goal also came just a day after a terrorist attack in Egypt in which more than 300 people died.

This time, though, the Egyptian could barely contain himself in front of the exuberant home support before being mobbed by his delighted team-mates.

In the context of the game and the season, it meant that much.

Salah's 22nd goal of the season – and 19th in the Premier League, moving him level with Sergio Aguero at the head of the top-flight scoring charts – was Liverpool's second goal in as many minutes shortly after the break, a flurry that ultimately settled this at times almost unbearably tense encounter.

Jurgen Klopp's side weren't brilliant – Chelsea were afforded far too many chances – but their overall display merited three points to move back to the top of the Premier League table.

Salah has no umbrage with Chelsea, but this would have felt particularly sweet.

Liverpool have now come through the toughest period of the run-in unscathed.

And Salah has been integral, forcing the late own goal against Tottenham Hotspur, netting the crucial second against Southampton and then conjuring this astonishing goal of the season contender.

This, in particular, was a huge victory for the Reds, burying the ghosts of five years previous and providing further proof this team, as Klopp has insisted, is writing its own history.

Manchester City, again two points adrift having briefly leapfrogged Liverpool with a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace earlier in the day, still have that game in hand.

But Pep Guardiola's men have their own tricky triumvirate to come next week, hosting Tottenham Hotspur before travelling to Manchester United and Burnley.

Liverpool have the momentum. And, what's more, they have an on-fire Salah.
