What Mikel Arteta has said about Rob Holding as Arsenal star responds to transfer speculation

Rob Holding took to social media in the aftermatch of reports claiming Arsenal are open to selling him this summer.

Holding moved to the Emirates Stadium from Bolton Wanderers for a fee of around £2million back in 2016, and has enjoyed some success in north London.

The defender started in Arsenal's 2-1 win over Chelsea in the 2017 FA Cup final, and started to establish himself in former boss Unai Emery's plans during the Spaniard's first season.

But this season, the English centre-back has only made three appearances and just a solitary start under Mikel Arteta.

And reports have claimed that the central defender’s future in north London could be in doubt.

The Athletic’s Ornstein and Chapman podcast say that Arsenal will be listening to offers for Holding in the upcoming transfer window, along with fellow defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi.

Holding shared a picture on Instagram with a cryptic caption, suggesting that he intends to ignore the speculation about his future.

"Focus your energy on what you can control," he said.

Amid the reports, Arteta previously hailed Holding as a player who will be "valuable" for the club.

“He is a very interesting player, very focused, very determined and very willing to learn,” said Arteta at his pre-match press conference before the Gunners' FA Cup tie against Bournemouth in January.

“Obviously the fact he has been out for such a long time, he is lacking competition now and lacking that rhythm.

"We need to try to give him as much as possible to help him.

“There were some moments that he looked really, really good. He is a player that is going to be very valuable for us.”
