What Mikel Arteta has previously said on Martin Odegaard being captain ahead of Arsenal decision

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has previously said that Martin Odegaard has ‘the personality’ to be a captain, ahead of choosing a new man to take the armband at the Emirates Stadium.

Previous captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the role on Tuesday, with it being confirmed by the club following an undisclosed disciplinary breach.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has remained tight-lipped over who could be appointed as the Gabonese’s replacement in north London but some supporters have suggested that a potential candidate could be Martin Odegaard.

The 22-year-old, whilst being early in his Arsenal career, has plenty of leadership experience having been appointed captain of the Norway national side this year.

Gunners’ boss Arteta has suggested that he was the ideal candidate to assume that role for his nation.

Talking in a press conference in March, the Spaniard said: “I'm not surprised after sharing some time with him now. I'm not surprised at all.

“He's got this personality, he's a really humble and easygoing guy but at the same time, he's very, very professional and very dedicated.

“He leads by example, which normally a captain should do.”

Of course, since then Odegaard has become a permanent Arsenal player having initially impressed during a loan spell from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He is also doing his chances of claiming the armband very little harm with a series of impressive performances on the pitch.

Odegaard has netted in each of his last three Premier League matches and will be hoping to continue that in Wednesday’s clash with West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium.
