What Mikel Arteta failed to do for Arsenal after frustrating Burnley draw as 13-year run ends

Mikel Arteta was left to watch on frustrated as Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw by Burnley at the Emirates on Sunday - a result that also saw the end of a 13-year-old run.

It means Arsenal finish their January fixtures without a win, more red cards than goals and eliminated from both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

While the Gunners did not struggle to create chances against Burnley, they were wasteful once they came about, with Alexandre Lacazette and Emile Smith Rowe both guilty of wasting golden opportunities.

Arteta's post-match press conference reflected a frustration with his attacking unit, bemoaning a lack of "spark" needed to win a game like this.

"The way we started the game, it was slow and we didn’t play forward enough and didn’t have enough urgency," he said in his post-match press conference.

"Afterwards we picked the game up and started to get better, and certainly the second half was completely different. We were much more dynamic, we had more penetration, we played forward and we had better positions to (threaten them) in behind and the width, in many situations. We created a number of situations, shots, crosses.

"But to win this match you need to have a different level of quality, and we lacked that today. With the amount of situations we generated, you need a spark, and someone has to win you the game, if you want to be on top."

It is a draw that leaves Arsenal in sixth place but only two points behind Manchester United in fourth, with a game in hand too.

However, the draw on Sunday marked the end of an impressive run for Arsenal that stretched back as far as October 2008.

In the years since, Arsenal had never failed to win when faced with a side bottom of the Premier League, but on Sunday that changed with Sean Dyche's men sat at the foot of the table when they came to the Emirates.

The last side they failed to beat who sat bottom was Tottenham Hotspur who, after a slow start to the 2008-09 campaign, drew 4-4 with the Gunners at the Emirates.
