What Michael Essien did during his recent visit to the Chelsea training ground

Michael Essien returned to the Chelsea training ground recently, and it was an experience for all involved.

The 36-year-old, who currently plys his trade in Azerbaijan with Sabail FK, was back on familiar grounds recently as he paid a visit to the Cobham training ground in a bid to keep himself fit.

Whilst there, Essien was able to take part in a training session with the Chelsea women's team as they prepared for a Champions League tie against Lyon.

The date Chelsea's 2019/20 home kit will be unveiled & when it could be worn for the first time

Striker Erin Cuthbert has revealed how the session went and commented on just how committed Essien was.

“We were doing rondos, where you have one or two players in the middle of a circle trying to intercept the ball, and he was flying around the place and doing nutmegs and all sorts," she said .

“None of us left a foot in, though. Because were were all a bit wary about getting injured before the Champions League games.

"We're used to mixing with the men's players because both teams are based at Cobham, which is an incredible place.

"I'm not joking when I say there must be 40 pitches there and every one of them is perfect.

"We're in a different building from the men but we use a lot of their facilities, so I was in the hot and cold pools the other day and there were a few of the guys around."

Essien will be back at Stamford Bridge next month as it has been confirmed he along with Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho will be playing for the Soccer Aid World XI against England on Sunday 16 June.
