What Met office says about scorching heat as temperatures go above 30C

Scorching temperatures are set to hit Bristol this week as warm air arrives from France.

The mercury will reach 25C today in Bristol according to the Met Office, with plenty of sunshine predicted from 3pm this afternoon.

Temperatures will then rise to a blistering 31C tomorrow (July 23) before returning to 26C on Wednesday, the weather agency says.

A Met Office spokeswoman said warm air pushing in from France is behind the sudden rise in temperature predicted for tomorrow.

She said: "The UK is under warm tropical air from the Atlantic today. However, tomorrow warm air pushes in from France and we see temperatures rise.

"On Wednesday (July 24), air from the Atlantic again pushes into the west of the UK suppressing temperatures a little before once again the warm air from the south becomes more widespread on Thursday (July 25)."

Last week, weatherman Liam Dutton addressed reports that the UK could soon enjoy a and described the likelihood as "very small".

"The relatively high probability of our warmest category does not imply hot weather throughout the three-month period," wrote Dutton on Twitter, quoting the Met Office's official line which merely states that above average temperatures are more likely than below average temperatures as we continue into summer.

He then adds: "The likelihood of a three-month long heatwave is very small. Couldn't be clearer."
