What Mesut Ozil did on his Fenerbahce debut after almost one year without playing

Mesut Ozil made his first competitive appearance in almost a year as he got off to a winning start with Fenerbahce.

The 32-year-old left Arsenal in the January transfer window after a tumultuous final season at the Gunners in which he was exiled from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

Ozil's last game was 332 days ago against West Ham on 7 March 2020 before he was left out of the squads by manager Mikel Arteta.

He won three FA Cups with Arsenal and scored 44 goals in 254 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.

The former Real Madrid star made his Fenerbahce debut in an away match to Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor and played the final 18 minutes, replacing Mame Thiam who scored the first half goal for Fener.

"Arsenal is a club of class and prestige, something that I felt every time I walked on to the pitch," Ozil said in an open letter to the Arsenal fans after leaving the club last month.

"Players, staff and management always come and go - but the club's values and fans will remain forever.

"The principles of class, respect and dignity must never be forgotten. It is the responsibility of every single person from the club to make sure they carry out their job in the name of these values."

Ozil's major contribution of the closing stages was to produce a pre-assist as Ferdi Kadioglou crossed into the box before Jean Claude Billong put the ball into his own net.

Boupendza pulled one back for the hosts with an outstanding volley, but Fener held on to secure all three points.

Fenerbahce now head into a mammoth derby match against Galatasaray ensuring they will be top of the table.
