What Maurizio Sarri has said about a return to Serie A next season amid AC Milan links

Chelsea sit fourth in the Premier League table and are in the semi-final of the Europa League.

In addition, they reached the Carabao Cup final and remain on course to return to the Champions League for next season

Despite this, there's still speculation in regards to the future of Maurizio Sarri as head coach. He only succeeded compatriot Antonio Conte last summer but he's been under pressure for much of the season amid some mixed results.

Paul Merson names the surprise manager Chelsea should have approached to take over from Sarri

The latest rumour, according to reports in Italy , is that Sarri has been identified as a successor to Gennaro Gattuso at AC Milan.

It wasn't too long ago when the Italian was being linked with a managerial role at AS Roma, but he appeared to quash talk of a return to Serie A for next season when speaking after the Blues' win over Malmo a couple of months ago.

"Of course no, because I have a contract with Chelsea for next season so it is impossible," he told BT Sport .

As his first season in English football approaches its end, Sarri has recently spoken of his excitement ahead of the new campaign and vowed to close the gap on Manchester City as well as Liverpool within two seasons.

"The Premier League is wonderful and I want to remain in the Premier League," he added. "I want to remain at Chelsea, because the level is very, very high.

"The atmosphere in the stadiums is really fantastic. And so it's a wonderful championship. I'd like to remain here. I am sure that, in two seasons, we will be able to close to them (Liverpool and Manchester City).

So it would appear that Sarri has all but ruled out a return to Italian football's top flight next season, but the decision might be taken out of his hands should Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League.

With that said, it's shaping up to be an interesting final weeks of the season for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
