What Mauricio Pochettino said to convince Tanguy Ndombele to make £63m Tottenham transfer

Tottenham Hotspur fans were given a double treat on Tuesday.

Firstly the club ended their 500+ day transfer drought with not one but two signings - which is somewhat out of the ordinary for Spurs given they've tended to business late down the years.

Secondly, the Lilywhites smashed their transfer record by completing the signing of Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a fee of £63m, eclipsing the £42m on Davinson Sanchez from Ajax a couple of years ago.

It wasn't easy as Spurs had strong competition for his signature, most notably from the likes of Manchester United and Juventus.

But Mauricio Pochettino proved to be the difference maker.

A report in l'Equipe on Wednesday offers an insight into the transfer process and what Pochettino said to convince Ndombele to make the move to north London.

As per Get French Football News , the report says: "At the end of June, meetings in London occurred discreetly – Mauricio Pochettino, accompanied by his assistant and francophone (thus also translator) Miguel D’Agostino, made a strong impression on Ndombele.

"Poch talked ambitions, specific positioning, how he would be used, methods of work – with his no bull**** attitude, Ndombele was convinced.

"Pochettino said the following to the player: "I know that it is going to be difficult but I want to keep you as the Tanguy that you are. The Tanguy who pushes on, who breaks the lines."

Spurs fans could get their first glimpse of the Ndombele "who pushes on, who breaks the lines" when Spurs take part in the International Champions Cup pre-season tournament later this month.

Ironically his debut could come against the two aforementioned teams interested in signing him.

Ndombele's arrival means competition for midfield places at Spurs increases.

There's the potential of many combinations including one with compatriot Moussa Sissoko as well as an exciting one alongside Harry Winks.
