What Mauricio Pochettino said about whether he would manage Arsenal in wake of Unai Emery exit

Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the vacant managerial job at Arsenal in the wake of Unai Emery's sacking but the former Tottenham boss has always made his feelings on that clear.

The Argentine was sacked by Spurs last week, and replaced by Jose Mourinho. In the days since he has been linked with the Gunners despite his five-and-a-half year association with Tottenham.

Now with the departure of Emery, who Pochettino was friends with, the former Spurs boss is again being linked with the job.

However, former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson does not believe the manager would make the trip across north London even though people will be looking at him.

"I think a lot of people would turn and look at Mauricio," he told Sky Sports. "My only contact with him came at the lunch for our charity awards when he held it up and joked that 'nobody can say I haven't won a trophy now'. We had given him the manager of the year award.

"I found him to be an extraordinarily humane, friendly man. He was absolutely brilliant but I think with that sort of character I cannot believe that he would then jump into the job at Arsenal. I don't think he has the personality or as a human being would do that.

"Being as close as it is to his leaving Tottenham and I'm very surprised Tottenham have gone that route anyway."

Pochettino made it clear last year that he would never work for the other north London side.

"I would never train Barcelona or Arsenal because I am tied to Tottenham. I grew up at Newell's and I would never train Rosario Central," he said.

"This is my decision. I would prefer to work on my farm in Argentina than to go and work in certain places."

In his statement, released on Thursday through the League Managers Association, Pochettino again spoke of his respect for the club's fans.

"I would like to thank [owner] Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy for giving me the opportunity to be part of Tottenham Hotspur's history," said Pochettino.

"I would like to thank also everyone I met at Tottenham, all the club staff and the football players during these five-and-a-half years.

"Finally I would like to give a special mention to the fans who make this club so great with their fantastic support.

"I gave the best of me to accomplish the objectives I was asked for in our first meeting. There were equally tough challenges as exciting success.

"Best wishes for the future, I am sure we will cross paths again."

Some will point to the fact that Mourinho admitted last week that he changed his thoughts on never managing Spurs after being sacked by Chelsea, but Pochettino appears to have close the door on a move to Arsenal.
