What Mauricio Pochettino said about Giovani Lo Celso's performance in Red Star Belgrade rout

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has praised Giovani Lo Celso for his performance in the 4-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade.

The summer signing hasn't enjoyed the best of starts to life in north London with a hip injury limiting him to only six substitute appearances prior to the game in Serbia.

With the manager bringing him off the bench in the team's last three games following the October international break, he decided to hand him his full debut in a crucial Champions League match for the club.

The decision proved to be the right one as the 23-year-old had a big impact on proceedings as he opened the scoring on the night.

Having looked like the chance had evaded them as Son Heung-min somehow hit the crossbar from point-blank range after a mad goalmouth scramble, Lo Celso controlled the ball in the area before finding the back of the net.

The Argentine carried on impressing in the second half and he was given a brilliant ovation from the travelling support when he made way for Oliver Skipp in the closing minutes.

Pochettino was asked about the player's performance in the important European win and he hailed his fellow countryman for his display.

“I think it was very good," he said. "Always it’s difficult for a new player when he arrives, and after the team was very successful last season.

"He arrived at the end of the pre-season. The circumstances were that he was behind everyone, got injured with the national team and then it was about building his fitness and his confidence, and then waiting for the opportunity to be in the starting XI and feel the opportunity.

"I am happy because he is a very good player and his personality and character is great.

"Now he only needs time like Tanguy [Ndombele] and Ryan Sessegnon.

"They are so young. They arrive now to the team in difficult circumstances, not the best circumstances.

"That is why like I tell you always I don’t expect too much, I am happy with that they provide to the team.

"They need time. I am happy with the players."
