What Matthijs de Ligt told Man Utd as Ajax captain rejected £60million transfer

Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt has rejected a £60million summer move to Manchester United .

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to reshape his side, and will be handed considerable transfer funds after United’s dismal end to the current campaign.

The Norwegian, in his first summer transfer window at Old Trafford, had made Dutch international De Ligt one of his prime targets as he looks to strengthen United’s defence.

But the teenager, whose Ajax side have one foot in the Champions League final after a 1-0 semi-final first leg win over Spurs, has told United they must look elsewhere.

De Ligt. through agent Mino Raiola, told United chiefs that he had no intention of signing a five-year deal worth in the region of £250,000 - despite Raiola believing it would be his best financial offer.

A source close to De Ligt told the Daily Star: "Matthijs is going to become the best defender in the world.

"He will have the choice to join whoever he wants, but he has no interest in going to United. They are not the attractive proposition they once were.

"He knows he is in a strong bargaining position because his stock has risen so fast. He's one of the most in demand stars on the planet."

The 19-year-old is set to leave Ajax this summer, with the Amsterdam club resigned to cashing in.

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has already confirmed there is “zero chance” of De Ligt remaining in the Eredivisie.

United, Arsenal , Barcelona , Real Madrid , Juventus and many more have sent scouts to watch him over the last 18 months.

But De Ligt is understood to want to join current teammate Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona.

Midfielder De Jong has already sealed a £75million switch to Camp Nou.

The Spanish champions are currently remaining coy over a deal to sign De Ligt, but it's understood they are willing to cash in on France defender Samuel Umtiti to land him.
