What Mateo Kovacic told his Chelsea teammates ahead of Euro 2020 'battle' with England

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has warned his Blues teammates to expect a “battle” during England’s meeting with Croatia.

The two sides clash at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they get their respective Euro 2020 campaigns underway.

The Croatian could potentially be reunited with a few of his Chelsea teammates during the match with the likes of Mason Mount, Ben Chilwell and Reece James all in contention for the Three Lions ahead of their opening group match.

It has of course been a memorable season for Chelsea having lifted their second UEFA Champions League crown against Manchester City, whilst also claiming a position in the Premier League top four.

Thomas Tuchel’s men almost went all the way in the FA Cup final, too, only to be denied by Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.

Whilst Kovacic has wished his club teammates good fortune ahead of the tournament, he has said that his side will be going all out to frustrate England once again following their victory in the 2018 World Cup semi-final in Brazil.

He said: “We know England have young, fast and agile players. Their fans are also expecting a lot from them. It will be difficult for us.

“I wished my English team-mates luck, and they offered the same gesture, but everyone will be fighting for their own side.”

The 27-year-old could be reunited with his Blues teammates, but Kovacic could also be a direct rival to Mount in the heart of the midfield.

The former Real Madrid man is expecting a real fight for positions at Wembley Stadium at the weekend.

“There will be a battle in the midfield, but we are ready,” he continued.

“We are working hard for every match and we will give our best. It is a big tournament so I know a lot is expected from us.”
