What Mason Greenwood has been told before first Manchester United start this season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood is one of the best finishers he has seen as the Manchester United youngster prepares for his first start of the season.

Greenwood, 17, has emerged in four of the five Premier League games this term but Solskjaer has already confirmed the academy striker will start against Astana in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Solskjaer gave Greenwood his career debut at Paris Saint-Germain in March and the Bradford-born goalscorer made his full bow in the final game of last season in the 2-0 defeat to Cardiff.

Greenwood impressed during his cameo at Southampton just over two weeks ago and Solskjaer was happy to confirm his starting place against Kazakh side Astana.

"He's still very young, Mason," Solskjaer said. "But he's maturing, he's developed so much in the last six months since I came in.

"I remember the kid who just wanted to play with his mates in the Under-18s and he's knocking on the door and ready to play these games.

"He's been with the Under-21s with England, he's tasting it more, his appetite for football must be growing, I just don't want to put too much pressure on him.

"Apart from go out there, enjoy yourself, work hard, close down because when the ball lands at your feet I know you're going to score anyway. I know you're gonna make the right finish.

"He's one of the best finishers I've seen, it's just that enjoyment, express yourself at Old Trafford.

"There'll be 11 Astana players living the dream tomorrow, one of the biggest games of their careers but I want it to be a memorable one for our players as well."

Greenwood could be joined in the line-up by Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner. Chong, 19, came on against Leicester at the weekend and Gomes was a substitute, while Garner scored during the pre-season tour.

It is unlikely the entire quartet - who have just one competitive start between them - will start against Astana but Solskjaer has no qualms about subjecting the rookies to European football.

Solskjaer added: "He [Greenwood]'s better than me now, for sure, but I don't have the accuracy anymore. It's a process, and for these [youngsters], we trust them, it's for them to grow as players and also human beings, the responsibility of being robust enough to go out at Old Trafford. It's not just about enjoying yourself, you've got to get results and if you don't throw them in you don't know what you've got.

"For me, I don't see any other way of doing this, because I've always done this wherever I've been, I've not been too many places! But that's my belief as a coach to give him a chance, an opportunity.

"Especially forward players, they'll win you games, defenders as Axel [Tuanzebe] says, it's a shift, find a way to win a game and keep them out. And I don't expect Axel to be the most creative player on the pitch tomorrow, he's defending, he's a defender.

"Mason is a forward and if he misses a chance he maybe gets the headlines for the wrong reasons."
