What Mark Drakeford had to say about parents with Covid sending their kids to school

Mark Drakeford has declined to condemn parents who send their kids to school when they themselves have Covid.

Under the current rules a parent who has Covid can send their child to school as long as the children take a test and do not also test positive.

Headteachers said it shows how the new school opening framework is too weak - and that some children in this situation later tested positive themselves.

When WalesOnline asked the First Minister if parents should do this and if there should be rules preventing it Mark Drakeford responded: "As you said that is within the current rules. If the rules need to be amended and anybody wants to put forward that proposition then we have all the machinery that we have used throughout. if someone thinks that is the right idea they can put that idea forward and have it discussed."

When pressed if he would do that as a parent the First minister responded: "I don't think I can answer that question in that way because you would make your answer in proper consultation with the school authorities having taken account of the advice the Welsh Government provides.

"They should be in contact with the school and people who are best place to give that advice then they will be able to make a properly informed decision. 90% of all our teachers are now we vaccinated that was not the case in other parts of the pandemic.

The latest Swansea University modelling suggests we will reach the peak of the current wave of coronavirus in Wales "very soon".

These models have proved accurate in the past and have fed into Welsh Government decisions making throughout the pandemic. Even the most pessimistic models suggest that the peak will be achieved in early October.

See our interview with the Swansea University professor whose modelling the Welsh Government is using.

If this is the case it will be significant because it will be the first major long term reversal in the R rate without intervention since the start of the pandemic.

However this modelling is yet to be backed up by the data. You can see the full analysis of what this modelling means for Wales here.
