Mario Pasalic serves timely reminder at Atalanta to expose Chelsea's potential £12.5m mistake

Regardless of what happens at the Allianz Arena next week, Chelsea will be represented in this season's Champions League quarter-final.

Ethan Ampadu's RB Leipzig side knocked out Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, while Mario Pasalic - on loan at Atalanta - is also through to the latter stages after helping the Serie A side to overcome Valencia over two legs.

Speaking of the latter, he is responsible for Frank Lampard being set to receive a welcome windfall which will help to boost his summer transfer budget at Chelsea.

Frank Lampard: Chelsea not favourites in top four race

According to the Guardian, Atalanta will take up the option to turn Pasalic's loan move into a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

The Croatia international is currently into the final few months of his loan deal with the Serie A outfit and has clearly done enough to earn a permanent move.

Should he opt to join La Dea then Chelsea will pocket a cool €15m (£12.5m) which will come in handy after splashing out £33.4m to agree a deal with Ajax for the signing of Hakim Ziyech when the summer transfer window opens.

But are the west London outfit making a mistake by not recalling Pasalic?

Well, some Blues supporters think this is the case after watching Pasalic record two assists as Atalanta beat Valencia 4-1 in the first-leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie last month.

He teed up Josip Ilicic to make it 2-0 shortly before half-time and then played the final pass for Hans Hateboer to run through unchallenged and net his second of the night at the San Siro.

In total Pasalic has seven assists across all competitions so far this season, two of which have come in European football's elite club tournament and he also has a goal to his name against Manchester City.

It's safe to say Pasalic's stock is rising and some Chelsea fans think the club should be getting more than the reported £12.5m transfer fee.

Take a look at what's been said previously on Twitter...

With that said, Pasalic is set to get his wish as he did reveal last season that he wanted to stay in one place after numerous loan spells away from Chelsea.

"I like it here. In the past, I’ve changed shirts so many times and it isn’t easy, he said. "I’d like to stay somewhere for three or four years in one place. We’ll see how this campaign goes and we’ll sit down afterwards. I need the right city and the right club to improve.

"I know that if I do well, I can show that I can be one of the greats."
