What Mario Lemina's £15m arrival at Arsenal would mean for Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina has emerged as a key transfer target for Arsenal head coach Unai Emery this summer.

The former Juventus man has been with the Saints for two seasons after leaving Serie A - but is said to be on the Gunners shopping list as they look to strengthen their side ahead of the new season.

While Lemina's preferred position is as a deep-lying midfielder who patrols the backline, he is versatile and can play in a number of positions in midfield, or in defence.

And it is his ability to play as a full-back that gives added cause to why Arsenal would be keen on the deal.

While he would be a valuable addition to Emery's squad as a defensive pivot, bolstering the trio of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Gunedouzi who currently compete in that position, Lemina's versatility is key.

With Emery said to only have £40m in his transfer kitty, with around £27m of that could still be expected to be shelled out for teenage defender William Saliba, the £15m-rated Lemina could offer a solution to the thorny problem of right-back.

Lemina started his career at Lorient, featuring as a winger and an auxiliary wing-back before moving to Marcelo Bielsa's Olympique Marseille.

In his first season with the French giants he appeared at centre-back, as an attacking midfielder - and as a right-back.

And it is his experience playing in that particular position which Lemina could leverage in landing a role at the Emirates.

With first choice right-back Hector Bellerin still recovering from a cruciate ligament injury to his left knee, the role needs to be filled, at least in the short term.

Previous candidates have included the experienced Stephan Lichtsteiner - who has since left the club after failing to impress in the slot despite a good performance against Brighton in the club's last home game of 2018/19.

He put in a handful of competent, if not earth-shattering performances, although that does not mean he deserved an extra year once his 12 month contract which expired at the end of June,  albeit he still performed at a marginally higher level than fellow right-back Carl Jenkinson.

Jenkinson is well known to Gunners fans as true Gooner with his support of the club going back many generations in his family.

Unfortunately he has failed to make the right-back spot his own, giving Emery a further headache - but one that the Arsenal head coach could solve, at least on a temporary basis, with the addition of Lemina.

Yes, some doubts remain around Lemina's temperament after he received a red card when playing for Juventus against Lyon in the Champions League

Not long after Juve boss Max Allegri moved him on to Southampton. But £15m for a utility player with Premier League experience - and one that could fill a troublesome position - should be considered good business, even with Arsenal's less than grand budget.

However, what would his arrival mean for the versatile Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has previously filled the spot?

While he started out as a striker he dropped further back to become a central midfielder in Arsenal's academy. The confident youngster has even gone on record as saying he could do a job as a winger for the club.

But while Maitland-Niles possesses athletic qualities in abundance, including strength, pace and an ability to power forward when supplementing attacking forays - all attributes Emery requires in a full-back - the fact is the 21-year-old has not impressed sufficiently to be able to claim the spot as his own.

His inexperience counts against him, even if his technique - honed by many years in the Arsenal academy after joining as a six-year-old - marks him out as a proficient player.

He is renowned for his calmness on the ball, but he does have a propensity to make errors which detract from his overall play.

However, the England U21 international has been earning a reputation as a jack-of-all-trades - appearing as a wing-back, a central midfielder, even as a left-back for the first team.

Yet it was his performance against Rennes in the Europa League last season that was a particular high point - while offering a clue to where his future lies.

After losing the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie 3-1 to the Ligue1 side at the Stade Roahazon in Brittany, Emery opted for a 3-4-1-2 formation with Maitland-Niles on the right of the midfield four.

It was a masterstroke by Emery allowing the youngster to excel as the Gunners turned the tie around.

Not only did he notch his first Gunners goal, he marked the dangerous Benjamin Bourigeaud out of the game in the crucial 3-0 victory that saw Arsenal through 4-3 on aggregate.

While Rennes' Calais-born player scored the Brittany side's equaliser in the first leg as they stormed to a memorable first leg victory, he did not even manage a shot on goal in the return leg at the Emirates, thanks to Maitland-Niles.

Yes, Maitland-Niles had a subsequent dip - most notably when showing his inexperience when he was sent off in the first half against Leicester City at the end of April as Emery's side slumped to a 3-0 defeat.

And yes, he didn't cover himself in glory during the 4-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Europa League final in Baku in May.

But if Emery were to land Lemina and play him at right-back as cover for the injured Bellerin, then Maitland-Niles could still have a future at the club if he can produce the performance levels on the right hand side of midfield that Emery knows he is capable of.
