What Marcelo Bielsa has done to transform Patrick Bamford to make him crucial to Leeds United

Former Leeds United and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes Patrick Bamford has been completely transformed under Marcelo Bielsa.

The striker has been the Argentine’s main frontman this season, having made 38 appearances in all competitions so far, scoring 13 goals in the process.

Bamford made the move to Elland Road in 2018 from Middlesbrough, having gone through a string of loans during his time at Chelsea.

The 26-year-old had spells at six different clubs, including Derby, Crystal Palace and Norwich, before making the permanent move away from Stamford Bridge.

And Robinson feels he’s finally found his home with Leeds, and under Bielsa he “looks like a man on the pitch now”.

“Bielsa really likes him, you can see that,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News. “And Patrick is the sort of player who needs that support.

“He’s 26 and he’s almost had as many clubs as his age. He’s been on loan every year and never found a home.

“This is the longest he’s stayed at any club and you can see the relationship he has with his manager is very important. Bielsa gets the best out of him.

“I played with him at Burnley and he’s definitely a different player now to what he was. He’s more confident, he’s stronger, Bielsa has improved his all-round game. He looks like a man on the pitch now.

On Bamford’s record for Leeds, Robinson added: “Yes, he’s guilty of missing chances but his performance and work rate is there. I’m sure Patrick will be an integral part of his plans next season. He’s a completely different proposition.

“He’s 26 and he’s had 10 clubs, that tells you something but he seems to have found a home under Bielsa.

“He’ll have to fight for his place, whether it’s Augustin that stays or they bring another striker… I think they’ll need three.”
