What Manchester United players said in the dressing room after Barcelona defeat in Champions League

Luke Shaw says Manchester United players are confident they can go to Barcelona and progress to the Champions League semi-finals.

United trail 1-0 at the half-way stage of the quarter-final with Barcelona thanks to Shaw's own-goal in the first leg, but the left-back revealed that the mood in the changing room was a positive one following the game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side recovered from a shaky start to impose themselves in the game, but while they restricted Barcelona to limited efforts in the second half, United had no attempts on target for the whole game.

However, Shaw said United will take confidence from their defensive display, and explained that the talk among the squad centred around their comeback win at PSG in the last-16, where they trailed 2-0 from the home leg.

Shaw told MUTV: "You look back and look to PSG game, that was even worse for me. The game we played then wasn't good but I felt we played better than we did against PSG.

"We're still very confident. We were all talking then in the changing room that we wanted to believe and we've done it before and we can do it again."

Shaw picked up his third booking of the season in the Champions League, meaning he will be suspended for the return leg at the Nou Camp next week.

But the left-back said he was confident his teammates could turn the tie around.

"Obviously I'm gutted that I'm going to miss that game," he continued. "But I'll be there with the lads to support them and see them do another special night like PSG."

Scott McTominay identifies the decisive Manchester United mistake in Barcelona defeat

United started with a back three in defence against Barcelona, with Shaw operating as the third centre-back. It was an unfamiliar role for Shaw, but he explained how it came from a week of hard work on the training ground.

He continued: "I played in a back three tonight and we worked a lot of it in the week in training and I knew what my job was and the whole team knew what their job was. I think we did it well.

"We defended very well and stopped them having too many chances but at the other end we could have created more chances the way the game was going.

"[We are] not too gutted, obviously we are a bit disappointed with the result but we're all very positive and I know the boys can pull off something positive in Barcelona."
