What Manchester United need to secure a top-four Premier League finish

Manchester United have sealed a spot in the Europa League final and are on the brink of another achievement in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are fighting for a spot in the top-four, which would secure Champions League football next season, and are on the brink of achieving that feat.

While the top-four position will assure United of Champions League involvement next season, they could still seal a first seed spot for the group-stage draw next term with victory in the Europa League.

However, with the fight for a top-four spot this season being fierce, securing the position with games remaining is worthy of acknowledgement and the hard work could be completed as soon as today.

United travel to face mid-table Aston Villa at Villa Park, knowing victory will all but secure a top-four spot as it will move their points total to 70 points - the maximum tally fifth-placed West Ham can achieve.

While United's goal difference is far superior to David Moyes' side, that spot will not be mathematically secure today unless Everton do them a favour.

A win for United, accompanied by anything other than a West Ham win against Everton later today, will guarantee a top-four spot.

If United were to be held to a draw by Villa, a defeat for West Ham against the Toffees would also be enough to secure United's spot in Europe's elite competition next season.

A loss for United, regardless of the result in West Ham's match, would leave Solskjaer's side waiting at least a few more days for their fate to be decided.

If a top-four finish is not secured today, United's game in hand over West Ham means that any delay in celebrations would merely be a postponement.
