What Manchester United did early on against Barcelona that Liverpool must not

Liverpool will meet Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals after brushing aside FC Porto.

The Reds cruised to a 6-1 aggregate victory, while Barcelona did the same in their 4-0 success over Manchester United earlier this week.

This now means a crunch tie against Barcelona for Liverpool - but whilst it may be daunting to come up against the Spanish giants, former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand believes the Reds should have a lot of belief.

Jurgen Klopp explains tactical switch that helped Liverpool beat Porto in Champions League

This is because he feels that Liverpool's style will be able to expose Barcelona.

But Ferdinand does have a word of warning and that revolves around not doing what United did early on against Barcelona, which was to waste key chances.

"I think Klopp will look at that first ten minutes (of Barcelona vs United) because if Salah, Sane and Firmino go through there, I’m expecting a different turnout," Ferdinand told BT Sport.

"I think they score those chances. And I think that game could be set up perfectly for Liverpool because they can play on the counter-attack as well.

Porto manager insists outcome was 'unfair' against Liverpool in Champions League

"They’re an energetic team. The physicality in that team is different to this Man United team. They’re ahead in that sense and I think they’ll cause more problems for this Barcelona team."

Ferdinand also warned against treating Lionel Messi in the way that United did - especially in the opening stages.

He added: "I’ve said it before: Chris Smalling smashed him [Messi] in the first game. It’s probably the worst thing that could have happened over that first game, to smash him, because they woke him up and he said: ‘Listen, I’ll put a clinic on here today and make sure you know about me’.

"And that’s what he did. A player of this ability, of this stature, sometimes you’ve just got to say he was too good and tonight [Tuesday] that was the case.

"Just to be here, there’s going to be people in this stadium - Man United fans - disappointed but they’re going to be able to say: ‘I was there to see Messi perform at that level’."
