What Manchester United can learn from Man City's transfer approach

Manchester United great Gary Neville believes that his former side can learn serious transfer lessons from their bitter rivals Manchester City .

The Red Devils are currently sixth and 25 points behind City, who lead the league by one point ahead of Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola's men are in the driving seat to become the first side to win consecutive league titles since 2009, with Manchester United the last team to achieve the feat ten years ago.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side could not be further away from competing with City for the title at the moment as the 2-0 loss at home to the Blues on Wednesday highlighted.

A huge summer transfer window awaits the Red Devils but Neville insists that Solskjaer and the board must not panic buy as the club have done in recent seasons.

Furthermore, Neville explains that they should take a leaf out of City's book, with the Blues having not panicked after missing out on the likes of Jorginho when the playmaker departed Napoli for Chelsea instead.

“United haven’t got a plan. Look at City in the summer, they wanted Jorginho, didn’t get him, and they stuck with what they had. They went for Alexis (Sanchez) and didn’t panic when they didn’t get him. There's composure in the club," Neville told Sky Sports.

Neville says the Red Devils must now identify what they need and the players they have to allow to leave, with the former defender insisting this has to be a swift process.

He added: “They need to identify what they need and which ones they actually like. I’m not sure who I’d keep. It’s a real confusion. You’ve got to decide who stays, who goes, then there’s the contract situations. Rashford, De Gea, Mata, Herrera. There’s turbulence. I agree, they need two centre-backs, but which are the two you currently keep (as back-up). It’s confusing."
