What Manchester City are set to do with new US international goalkeeper

Manchester City are planning to send US international goalkeeper Zack Steffen on loan to Fortuna Dusseldorf, according to reports.

The 24-year-old will join the Premier League champions from MLS side Columbus Crew on July 9 after a deal was initially agreed in December 2018 for a fee believed to be between £7 million and £10 million.

However, ESPN report that the goalkeeper is expected to join the Bundesliga club on loan when his transfer to the Manchester club becomes official.

It will be the second time Steffen has played in Germany after he spent the 2015-2016 season with Freiburg after coming through their youth teams.

The American stopper struggled to make an impact and made just 14 appearances for the club's reserve team before moving to Columbus Crew in 2016.

His return to the US brought a change of fortunes and he has enjoyed a successful few seasons in the MLS after establishing himself as the club's number one.

His performances for Columbus during the 2018 season saw him named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

Steffen has also won eight caps for the US national team and is expected to be the first-choice stopper for his country's upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign, which begins against Guyana on June 18 before games against Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama.

When asked about his upcoming move to Man City, Steffen said he was nervous about becoming part of Pep Guardiola's squad.

ESPN reported him as saying: "There's a lot of nerves, a lot of excitement, a little bit of sadness leaving the chapter in Columbus.

"But I'm really focused on the Gold Cup and doing well here, and raising the trophy here, and then I'll focus on what lies next."
