What Man Utd told Romelu Lukaku in showdown talks over his future

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has reportedly been told he can leave the club.

The Belgian has been heavily tipped to depart this summer as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's drastic squad overhaul.

According to The Sun , Lukaku was informed by club chiefs he can leave Old Trafford after they held showdown talks on Wednesday.

Lukaku reportedly spoke to club officials regarding his future after he returned from an end of season holiday in America.

He was told he will be allowed to leave this summer - but only for a substantial fee.

Inter Milan and Juventus are both said to be keen but Ed Woodward wants a deal worth just over the £75m they paid Everton for Lukaku just two years ago.

It is understood he would consider players being part of a cash and swap deal - particularly from Inter Milan, with Milan Skriniar and Ivan Perisic on Woodward's radar.

Lukaku will seriously consider a move despite not handing in a formal transfer request, although Serie A clubs will need to offer him lucrative terms with three years remaining on his £225,000 Old Trafford deal.

The powerhouse forward does not fit Solskjaer's style of play, although he put together a crucial run of goals during a run of form which culminated in United's Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Yet he struggled with injury and loss of form over the closing stages of the campaign as United's season fizzled out and they missed out on the top four.

Solskjaer has tended to prefer Marcus Rashford in a central role, and he could look to cash in on Lukaku to fund spending on a right back, centre back, central midfielder and right winger to overhaul his struggling squad.
