What Man Utd fans are saying about Matthijs de Ligt as he gives away penalty

Matthijs de Ligt might be world football's hottest prospect right now, but the Dutchman is still very much human, as he proved on Thursday afternoon in Holland's Nations League semi-final clash with England.

After a quiet start the centre-back was tested for the first time by Marcus Rashford who latched onto the ball in the box on the half hour mark.

De Ligt attempted to dispossess the striker but lunged a little too late and took down the Manchester United forward, conceding a penalty, which was then converted.

The Red Devils have been strongly linked with a transfer for the player, who is considered a huge upgrade on anything they have currently at Old Trafford.

But it seems some fans have changed their mind, comparing the defender's calamitous moment to something Phil Jones would do.

"Just being linked with United has turned De Ligt into Phil Jones," tweeted one Man United fan, while another added: "You hate to see it, De Ligt channeling his inner Phil Jones after being linked to United."

A third wrote: "Even being linked to United is enough to turn De Ligt into a Phil Jones," and a fourth concluded: "De ligt doing his best Phil Jones impression."

De Ligt has previously labelled Rashford the toughest opponent he has ever come up against following Ajax's Europa League defeat by Man United in 2017.
