What Man City want their ideal squad to look like after transfer deadline

Manchester City have just over a week to finalise their squad for the new season, with one key addition missing from the current group.

The transfer window closes on Tuesday, with the deadline for City to submit their official squad for the Premier League season on Wednesday.

When compared to last season, the squad won't be too different, with Sergio Aguero the only departure from the main list, along with Eric Garcia from the under-21 list.

Jack Grealish is the only addition at the moment, and he will fill a useful homegrown spot in a squad limited to 17 players who don't fulfil homegrown criteria.

With the signing of Grealish, plus the re-signing of Scott Carson, City now have six homegrown players in their squad, plus a number of younger under-21 players who would also be eligible for homegrown status when they become of an age where they must be included in the main squad.

Fernandinho's new contract means that City have 14 players in the senior squad who are non-homegrown, leaving space for three more players to add should they wish.

With a maximum number of 25, City's squad stands at 20 currently, with the likes of Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Ferran Torres eligible as under-21 players.

So if City were to name an ideal squad with a week or so left of the transfer window, they would likely add Harry Kane to their existing roster should they negotiate a deal with Tottenham. That would fill the hole left by Aguero with City keen to add a striking replacement for the Argentinian in the next few days.

That would take their squad up to 21 players, with Kane added as a seventh homegrown player. If Philippe Sandler stays for the season rather than leaving on loan, he could be added as a back-up option in another change from last season.

The idea squad would also see the likes of Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva stay, despite both of those players plus Gabriel Jesus being linked with exits this summer.

Man City idea squad for 2021/22 season: Carson*, Ederson, Steffen; Ake*, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Mendy, Sandler, Stones*, Walker*, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Bernardo, Grealish*, Mahrez, Sterling*, Jesus, Kane**.

Note - Phil Foden, Ferran Torres, Cole Palmer, Tommy Doyle and Liam Delap would all be among those eligible as under-21 players. Asterisk denotes homegrown players, with two asterisks denoting a player not yet signed.
