What Man City vs Chelsea team selection tells Newcastle fans about Sunday's FA Cup clash

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has named a strong starting line-up for the Premier League clash with Chelsea ahead of the upcoming FA Cup tie with Newcastle United.

The cup holders are in action at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night - three days before they are due on Tyneside for the eagerly-anticipated quarter-final tie with the Magpies.

Guardiola admitted in his pre-match press conference that the Citizens had "one eye" on the FA Cup encounter at St James' Park.

Yet the current Premier League champions have still named a strong line-up for their capital visit, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Aymeric Laporte, and Raheem Sterling all starting.

Ederson keeps his place in goal, with Kyle Walker, Laporte, Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy forming the defence.

Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri have been named as the deep-lying midfield pairing, while Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne and Sterling have been named in attack.

Despite the injury to Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus has to settle for a spot on the bench alongside the likes of David Silva, Leroy Sane and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Guardiola told reporters ahead of the match: "We cannot deny that we have one eye on the Newcastle game.

"Chelsea and Liverpool are prestigious and important games, but our game against Newcastle is a final for us.

"We have one eye on this situation so the team selection depends on the physical condition and the minutes they played the day before and the minutes they are going to play.

"We'll take a look a little bit at what's going to happen - not just the game against Chelsea."
