What Man City's FA Cup win means for European qualification from Premier League

Manchester City completed a historic domestic treble with their 6-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup Final.

It was another afternoon of celebration for Pep Guardiola's side, who have already secured their Champions League spot for next season after winning the Premier League.

But there were major implications from the game with regards to European qualification for English teams - with Manchester United and Wolves the big winners.

With City already destined for Europe, their victory saw seventh placed Wolves handed a spot in the Europa League as a result of being the highest ranked side not already in Europe.

Watford's defeat saw them miss out on a spot in the Europa League, with Wolves instead entering the competition at the second qualifying round.

With the FA Cup winners guaranteed entry to the group stages of the Europa League if they are not already in Europe, the result provided a major boost for Manchester United.

The Red Devils will now enter the Europa League at the group stage with Wolves taking on the qualifiers.

If Watford had won and gone straight into the group stage, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side would have been forced to start their season early to qualify.

With the qualifiers held in late July, it could have meant an early start to the season for Solskjaer, disrupting their Premier League preparations and also causing a headache with their pre-season tour of Asia.

They will instead enter the tournament in September when the group stages get underway with no extra summer fixtures.

Top four Manchester City , Liverpool , Chelsea and Tottenham are unaffected by the FA Cup outcome as they prepare for next year's Champions League.

Arsenal still have a chance to sneak into the elite European competition by winning the Europa League against Chelsea in Baku later this month.

A win would mean the Premier League has five teams in the Champions League, with Manchester United and Wolves flying the flag in the Europa League.
