What Man City need to win the Champions League under Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola is adamant that not winning the Champions League with Manchester City isn't going to define his time at the Etihad, but one former Blue has backed the club to go close to being crowned European champions - as long as they get a slice of luck.

The Blues have been knocked out in high-scoring ties by Monaco, Liverpool and Tottenham in the last three seasons and they're yet to make the semi-finals under Guardiola , who won the Champions League twice with Barcelona.

Conquering Europe is the final challenge in terms of trophies for Guardiola at City, but speaking before this season's campaign got underway he explained that winning the Champions League wasn't going to define his time at the club.

"We want to win it but if we don't, I am not going to kill myself," he said.

"Barcelona is the club in my heart. They didn't win it until 1992 but they were born a long time before that.

"I have a feeling we are closer but this competition is a high level and I wouldn't want to arrive once in the final and then disappear for five years. That would not be good."

City were a long way from European glory when Kevin Horlock was making more than 200 appearances for the club between 1997 and 2003, but he believes the Blues are in the running to win the trophy this year.

"I think the Champions League is a tough one,” Horlock told Express Sport .

“I’d love to say City [could win the trophy], and it could be. There’s probably three/four clubs that could win it, and they’re certainly one of them.

“We need the rub of the green, like we saw last year against Tottenham… The handball and so on and so forth.

“You need a bit of luck to win the Champions League I think, but they’re more than capable.”
