What Man City and Txiki Begiristain will have learned from watching Joao Felix and Luka Jovic

It might be that Txiki Begiristain's reported Thursday night jaunt to Lisbon ends up being very expensive for Sheikh Mansour.

Given the talent on show at the Stadium of Light it would have made sense for Begiristain to head to Portugal to watch Benfica take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.

City's director of football will have almost certainly liked what he saw as Benfica ran out 4-2 winners in an entertaining game.

The star of the show was Benfica's 19-year-old attacking midfielder Joao Felix, who scored a hat-trick and claimed an assist for the Eagles.

The teenager opened the scoring with a penalty, netted his second with a powerful drive from outside the area and side-footed in his third early in the second half, breaking Eusebio's record as the youngest Portuguese player to score a hat-trick in Europe.

Felix's performances for Benfica this season have caught the eye of most of Europe's leading clubs and he has 10 goals in 20 league games this term.

Four transfers Man City should consider to reinforce the right-back slot

The attacking midfielder could cost nine figures this summer but with City, Manchester United and Real Madrid all among the clubs with a reported interest in him Benfica could cash in.

But Begiristain's interest didn't end with the home side. City are also tracking Eintracht Frankfurt forward Luka Jovic and the Serbian caught the eye as well.

It was a strange night for Jovic, who was playing against his parent club as he comes towards the end of a two-year loan at Frankfurt from Benfica. UEFA rules forbid clauses blocking players from featuring against their parent club and Jovic made his point with a goal to briefly bring the Bundesliga side level.

Eintracht Frankfurt have already made it clear they will activate the clause to make Jovic's move permanent this summer, but they're likely to sell the 21-year-old almost as soon as that deal is completed.

The loan contract with Benfica means Frankfurt will have to pay just €7million to sign Jovic, yet he could also fetch upwards of £100million given the interest in him this summer.

After his goal in the Europa League tie at Benfica Jovic now has 26 goals in 41 appearances this season. Barcelona and City are among the clubs interested in Jovic, although his father hasn't ruled out him staying at Eintracht Frankfurt for another season.

"Luka has had many offers, one of them was Barca, but he's not interested now," Milan Jovic told German newspaper Bild.

"He's not sure he would get any minutes at Barca.

"The truth is that Luka wants to stay in the Bundesliga and qualify with Eintracht for the Champions League."

Felix and Jovic will certainly be in demand this summer. They've already shown their potential suitors, including City, what they can do. They'll have another chance to shine next Thursday in the Europa League quarter-final second leg, when scouts will again flock to the Commerzbank-Arena.
