The Western Morning News Business Awards are fast approaching, and nominations have been flying in.
The awards culminate in an evening of glitz and glamour where the winners from across Devon and Cornwall are awarded on stage at the Plymouth Pavilions.
It's even more special this year as the Western Morning News approaches its 160th birthday.
If you're yet to apply , here are some handy tips on what the judges will be looking out for in a strong application.
Eight steps to impress
- Make sure you read the entry criteria. It sounds simple however many people don’t and this will lose you points.
- Be quirky. What makes you stand out from your competitors? We want to know! We are looking for companies who are a little bit different or who can showcase something which isn't the norm within your marketplace or chosen category.

- Get help from colleagues. Pinpoint who in your organisation can help you with some of the more detailed information such as budgets and finances.
- Use the points in the criteria. Make the criteria points your headings for your answers and refer back to them as you construct your entry.
- Make sure you stick to the word count. It is important to structure each point and roughly plan how many words you will need as some will need more than others. If necessary use bullet points where you can to save on on words.
- Don’t be afraid to talk about what went wrong. There is nothing wrong with talking about the negative things but be sure to show how you overcame them.
- Stick to the facts. Don’t waffle on with meaningless marketing lingo!
- Focus your message. Go back through your entry and make sure that each point/paragraph has a point and a clear message.
The deadline for entries is Sunday September 15 and judging will begin shortly afterwards, when a shortlist will then be revealed.
This year, the awards ceremony will be held at the Plymouth Pavilions on Thursday, November 21.
